Best Places to Exercise Outdoors in Clapham Common

Living in Clapham means you've got one of South London's best outdoor gyms right on your doorstep — no membership required. As a personal trainer in Clapham, I train clients across the Common every single day, and I've found the spots that give you the best workout in the best surroundings.

Here are my favourite places to exercise outdoors on Clapham Common.

1. The Bandstand Circuit

The bandstand area is perfect for interval training. The flat, open grass gives you plenty of room for sprints, bear crawls, and agility drills, while the bandstand itself works brilliantly as a prop for step-ups, incline press-ups, and tricep dips.

Best for: HIIT sessions, circuit training, bootcamp-style workouts

2. The Long Pond Loop

The path around Eagle Pond and Mount Pond creates a roughly 1.5km loop — ideal for a warm-up jog or a timed run. The terrain is flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for all fitness levels.

Best for: Running, walking intervals, postnatal buggy workouts

3. The Avenue of Trees (North Side)

The tree-lined path running along the north side of the Common is one of the most scenic spots in SW4. The trees provide shade in summer, and the path is wide enough for lunges, walking squats, and resistance band work.

Best for: Resistance training, stretching, yoga-style cool-downs

4. Clapham Common Playground Area

Don't overlook the playground equipment outside of peak children's hours. Monkey bars, pull-up opportunities, and benches make this a surprisingly effective outdoor gym. Early mornings and weekday mid-mornings are the quietest times.

Best for: Bodyweight strength training, pull-ups, hanging exercises

5. The South Side Hill

The gentle incline on the south side of the Common is perfect for hill sprints and sled-free conditioning. Running uphill recruits more glutes and hamstrings than flat sprints, making it a brilliant lower-body session.

Best for: Hill sprints, glute-focused conditioning, stamina building

6. Windmill Drive Path

This quieter path near the Windmill pub area is excellent for 1-to-1 personal training. It's less crowded than the main Common, so you get more privacy and space. I use this area regularly with clients who prefer a calmer training environment.

Best for: Private PT sessions, focused strength work, stretching

Tips for Training Outdoors on Clapham Common

  • Check the weather — pack layers in winter and sun cream in summer

  • Bring water — there are no drinking fountains on the Common

  • Wear trail-appropriate trainers — the grass can be muddy after rain

  • Train with a buddy or a PT — motivation is higher and form stays better

  • Respect the space — pick up any equipment and leave no trace
