Clapham Common vs Gym: Which Is Better for Personal Training?

Clapham Common vs Gym: Which Is Better for Personal Training?

As a personal trainer working across Clapham and SW4, I get asked this all the time. Here's an honest comparison.

The Case for Clapham Common

Clapham Common is one of London's best outdoor training spots. Here's why:

  • Space — wide open areas perfect for sprints, circuits, and agility work

  • Fresh air — studies show outdoor exercise improves mood and reduces cortisol

  • Free — no gym membership needed

  • Variety — benches, hills, and paths add natural training tools

  • Bandstand area — great sheltered spot for rainy day sessions

The Case for a Gym

Gyms offer benefits too:

  • Heavy lifting equipment (barbells, cable machines)

  • Climate-controlled environment

  • Consistent surface for certain exercises

My Recommendation

For most of my Clapham clients, outdoor training on the Common delivers better results. You move more, work harder, and enjoy it more. The exception is if you have very specific strength goals requiring heavy equipment.

I also offer home sessions across Clapham for clients who prefer total privacy.

The Best of Both Worlds

Some clients mix it up — outdoor sessions on the Common in summer, home sessions in winter. That flexibility is one of the biggest benefits of working with a mobile personal trainer.
